Item Self-concept, parental support and academic satisfaction amongst students in selected public secondary schools in mukono municipality, mukono district(Kyambogo University [unpublished work], 2023-09) Mukisa, Alex KabugoThis study examined the relationship between self-concept, parental support, and academic satisfaction of students in public secondary schools in Mukono Municipality. Using a correlational survey design, data was collected using a structured questionnaire from a random sample of 298 students, selected in three public secondary schools. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and linear regression analysis. The findings revealed that a positive significant relationship existed between self-concept and academic satisfaction (r=29, p=.01); and between parental support and academic satisfaction (r= 407, p=. 01). Both parental support and self-concept positively predicted (β =.27, p<. 05) academic satisfaction of students. Parental support increased the contribution of self-concept to academic satisfaction. This means that, parental support is a very important factor in determining whether the self-concept of students can help them to have a positive perception of their academic lives. Therefore, ensuring good parental support can increase students' interest in academic pursuits, leading to higher academic satisfaction. It is recommended that to increase academic satisfaction and success of secondary school students, parenting programmes should be initiated on media and at community level to train parents on the skills of building their children's self-concept through their daily interactions and effectively using these interactions to mould better interest and involvement in their education.Item Family socio-economic status, parent-child engagement and girl-child retention in public secondary schools in Rubaga division, KCCA, Uganda(Kyambogo University [unpublished work], 2023-10) Aguti, MarthaCompleting education is one of the key factors in the life success and empowerment of the girl child. Full involvement in education and staying in school has been a challenge among secondary school girls in most urban areas of Uganda, especially after COVID-19. This study examined the relationship between Family Socio-economic Status, Parent-Child Engagement and Girl-Child Retention in government-aided secondary Schools in Rubaga Division, KCCA. Using a correlational design, data was collected with the help of a structured questionnaire from a random sample of 315 students, selected from 5 Government aided secondary schools in the division. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, factor analysis, Pearson correlation and regression analysis. The findings revealed that the Family Socio-Economic Status was positively (r =.34) related to Girl Child Retention and predicted about 15 % of Girl Child Retention. A positive and significant relationship (r =.51), existed between Parent-Child Engagement and Girl Child Retention and it contributed 15.2% to retention. It was found that a positive and significant relationship (r =.36), existed between Family Socio-Economic Status and Parent-Child Engagement. Parent-child engagement increased the contribution of Family Socio-Economic Status to Girl Child Retention by 15.2 %. Good Socio-Economic Status of the family, enables parents to have a clear vision for their children, and be actively involved in the lives of their children, thus improving parent-child engagement and reducing intentions to drop out of school. Schools with strong parent relationships, partnerships, and communication, sustain effective strategies for reducing girl-child school dropout. It is recommended that parents and guardians strengthen their relationship with the school and especially the teachers of their children as this may enable them to monitor their performance and character better. Parents should always pay their students’ school fees on time to enable students to concentrate on their studies and limit their intentions to drop out. A comparison study of government-aided and private secondary schools on Family socio-economic status, parent-child engagement and Girl-child retention is needed.Item Coping with Intimate Partner Violence: Experiences of Male Victims Reporting at Katwe Police Station, Rubaga Municipality in Kampala District(Kyambogo University [unpublished work], 2023-09) Lutaaya, AshirafThis study sought to gain insight into the experiences of Male Intimate Partner Violence and how they cope. It was, specifically, limited to exploring the physical, psychological, and sexual violence male victims experience; and exploring the coping strategies male victims of intimate partner violence employ, to manage the aforementioned Male Intimate Violence from their partners. A qualitative research approach was used and data was collected from social workers and male victims of Intimate Partner Violence through Key Informant interviews and Focus Group Discussions using purposive sampling procedures. This study established that males were physically violated through beatings, thrown at objects such as; cups, and plates, as well as being slapped and locked out of their houses in the night. This study revealed that men reported psychological abuse such as; verbal insults, being denied food, being falsely accused of cheating, being publicly ashamed, being cheated on, and experiencing abandonment, among others. This study also found out that men faced sexual violence through prolonged denial of sex, squeezing of their genitals, engaging in sexual intercourse against their consent, and threats of having their genitals cut. The current study established that the coping strategies employed by men to manage abuses were categorized into problem-focused, emotional-focused, avoidance, as well as seeking informal or formal support. Therefore, the study recommends that men should be sensitized about the available existing counselling and support services pertinent to their physical, psychological, and sexual experiences of Intimate Male Violence among men. It further recommends that laws and regulations that are silent about male IPV should be enacted and strengthened to protect men against the different forms of physical, psychological, and sexual experiences of IPV among men. Key words: Intimate Partner Violence, Coping Strategies, Male Victims.Item Technology Usage, Face to Face Communication and Romantic Partner Relationships A Case of the Uganda National Police Force(Kyambogo University [unpublished work], 2019-11) Jonathan, Kaula HaggaiThe study was a correlational quantitative analysis of the relationship between technology usage, face to face communication and romantic partner relationships, using a case of the Uganda police force. The study was underpinned by the couple and family technology theoretical framework by (Hertlein & Blumer, 2014). The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between the variables and assess the predictive potential of technology usage and face to face communication on romantic partner relationship. Three hundred twenty seven police officers were sampled for the study and data was collected using self-administered questionnaires. Findings show that there was a positive relationship between technology usage and face-to-face communication, (r=.069, p>.212). This suggested that positive changes in technology usage were related to positive changes in face-to-face communication. The study also showed that there was a significant positive relationship between face-to-face communication, (r= .424, p< .01). This suggests that positive changes in face-to-face communication do significantly increase romantic partner relationship. The study went ahead to show that there was a significant positive relationship between technology usage and romantic partner relationship, (r= .191, p< .01). This suggests that positive use of technology usage leads to an increase in romantic partner relationships significantly. The study also showed that technology usage and face-to-face communication had a 20.1 % predictive potential on romantic partner relationships meaning that the other 79 .9 % was predicted by other factors.Item Parental involvement, parent socioeconomic status, and primary school children’s literacy achievement: a case of Mbale district in Uganda(Kyambogo University [unpublished work], 2022-09) Noirine, KhaitsaThe purpose of the study was to establish the relationship between parental involvement, parent socioeconomic status, and primary school children’s literacy achievement. The objectives of this study included; to assess the relationship between parental involvement and primary school children’s literacy achievement; to examine the relationship between parent socioeconomic status and primary school children’s literacy achievement; to examine the relationship between parent socioeconomic status and parental involvement; to examine the predictive potential of parental involvement and parent socioeconomic status on primary school children’s literacy achievement and to establish the mediating effect of parent socioeconomic status in the relationship between parental involvement and primary school children’s literacy achievement. The researcher used a crosssectional descriptive research design where both qualitative and quantitate approaches were employed to analyze data. The main study consisted of 425 primary school pupils from Mbale district. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, and cross tabulations. Pearson correlation coefficient was utilized to derive an association among the study variables and findings were presented in pie diagrams and bar graphs and frequency tables. A multiple linear regression analysis to establish the prediction potential of parental involvement and parent socioeconomic status on primary school children’s literacy achievement was employed. Confirmation of mediation of Hypothesis five was done using Hayes process model (Hayes, 2017). The study revealed that showed that a weak significant positive relationship existed between parental involvement and primary school children’s literacy achievement in Mbale district (r = .219, p≤0.01); a weak significant positive relationship existed between parent socioeconomic status and primary school children’s literacy achievement in Mbale district (r = .290, p≤0.01); a weak significant negative degree of association existed between parent socioeconomic status and parental involvement in Mbale district (r =-.158, p≤0.01). Results in the regression analysis revealed that a combination of predictor variables parental involvement and parent socioeconomic status accounted for 15.1% (adjusted R square =.151) variation in primary school children’s literacy achievement. Based on the findings, there’s need to improve primary children’s literacy achievement. This can be done through schools and other development workers working together with professional counselors to respectfully encourage parents and care givers to fully participate in the education process of their children as well as supporting parents and caregivers to improve their family socioeconomic status since it has been noted to affect a children’s literacy achievement.Item Engagement in hair manufacturing organizations: a case of cascade industries limited and SCD (U) limited(Kyambogo University [unpublished work], 2021-10) Gilbert, MafabiThe study aimed at establishing the relationship between leader member exchange, employee creativity and employee engagement. The researcher used a cross sectional survey design using a quantitative approach. Convenience sampling design was adopted and the sample size was 240 respondents out of a target population of 650 employees. Data was analyzed using statistical package for social scientists (SPSS). Study findings reveal that there is a significant positive relationship between technology adoption and perceived job performance (r = .36, p ≤.01); technology adoption and employee engagement (r = .27, p ≤.01); employee engagement and perceived job performance (r = .32, p ≤.01). Technology adoption combined with employee engagement significantly predict perceived job performance (r²adj = .174, F=26.12**). The researcher recommends that further research should be carried on technology adoption, employee engagement and perceived job performance because the model explained only 17.4% of these variables. Therefore, a large percentage of the unexplained variance suggests the need for additional research incorporating potential unmeasured variables. The research was limited to a cross sectional research study and the researcher recommends that a longitudinal study should be considered in order to validate the findings.Item Women empowerment, intimate partner violence and psychological wellbeing among women in Kira municipality, Wakiso district(Kyambogo University, 2020-05) Twikirize, Jean MillyThe study aimed at examining the relationship between intimate partner violence, women empowerment and psychological wellbeing among women in Kira Municipality, Wakiso. The study was guided by the following objectives: to examine the relationship between intimate partner violence and psychological wellbeing, to assess the relationship between intimate partner violence and women empowerment , to assess the relationship between women empowerment and psychological wellbeing, to establish the mediating effect of women empowerment on intimate partner violence and psychological wellbeing and to determine the predictive potential of women empowerment and intimate partner violence on psychological wellbeing. The study followed a cross sectional survey design involving 392 women participants. Results indicated: a significant and positive relationship (r = .202, p≤ .001) between intimate partner violence and psychological wellbeing; a significant relationship (r =.309, p≤ .001) between intimate partner violence and women empowerment and a negative relationship (r = -.339, p≤ .001) between women empowerment and psychological wellbeing among the same women. Furthermore, the study established that women empowerment has a full mediation of the relationship between intimate partner violence and psychological wellbeing (Effect size= -29, Boot standard error = .07, BootLLCI= -.41, BootULCI=-.16), and women empowerment was found to be a strong predictor of Psychological Wellbeing, (= -.350, p ≤ .001); and intimate partner violence strongly predicted Psychological Wellbeing, (= -.327, p ≤ .001, with R2 =. 121). Hence, high levels of women empowerment increased intimate partner violence because empowerment is still perceived as a threat to traditional gender roles and male dominance where men fear that empowerment could cause women to deviate from their gender roles and become more self-independent, thus, undermining men’s authority.
