    Enhancing colour selection and application in graphics design among a-level students at Mbogo high school, Kampala

    The purpose of this study was to improve students’ performance in graphic design through enhanced skills in colour selection and use at Mbogo High School in Kampala, Uganda. The specific objectives were: (i) to identify and analyze the principles of colour applied in graphic design, (ii) to design learning activities that promote colour conceptualisation, and (iii) to evaluate graphic design layouts produced that are linked to colour conceptualisation. A participatory action research design was adopted, combining descriptive methods with collaborative inquiry. Data were collected from 30 A-Level Art students and 2 Art teachers using focus group discussions, classroom observations, and document analysis. A pairwise matrix within a Future Workshop framework was used to prioritise challenges affecting students’ colour use. The findings revealed that students had limited skills in colour selection, and teachers struggled with inadequate instructional strategies and limited experience. After the intervention, 80% of students demonstrated improved ability in colour selection, while teachers’ confidence and instructional competence increased by 30%. Student engagement and project completion rates rose by 25%, with noticeable improvements in colour harmony, contrast, and overall layout quality in graphic design tasks. The study recommends adopting structured, learner-centred teaching approaches, continuous professional development for art teachers, and provision of adequate instructional materials. These strategies can strengthen students’ colour conceptualisation skills, enhance performance in graphic design, and prepare learners for future creative and professional opportunities.
